The title Automotive Service Technician is perceived to be of a higher standard, however it certainly does not mean this person is better than a any other seasoned auto mechanic. But whether titled a technician or a mechanic, the best of the best automotive service professionals possess the same skill sets: dexterity and advanced hands-on learning ability as well as being capable (and willing) to continually advance themselves through continual education.
Common Auto Technician criteria:
- •Achieved several industry, factory or trade school certifications and licensing
- •Usually attend regular training updates when available
- •Feel the need to surpass the term “grease monkey” and often work clean and efficiently
- •Can repair vehicles professionally the first time, most of the time
Common Auto Mechanic criteria:
- •Achieved very few (if any) industry, factory or trade school certifications and licensing
- •May or may not attend regular training updates
- •Don’t really care about the need to surpass the term “grease monkey”
- •Can repair vehicles professionally the first time, most of the time
Perception is a very powerful thing. If one is perceives to be professional, they are. If a mechanic or technician feel they are professional – and can prove it, THEY ARE!
